Drip Brewer Basics

The Basics of brewing with drip brewer

Possibly the easiest and most conveniet form of brewing from your trusty Mr Coffee machine to hi-tech programable do it all machines!  The standard drip brewer is sure to be the go-to for that quick and convenient cup of hot coffee that you crave in the mornings.

We recommend starting with a 1:17 ratio of coffee to water.  For every 1 gram of coffee, use 17 grams of water.

One thing to note with coffee brewers in the US is what a "cup" is considered. A coffee pot "cup" is actually 5oz. A lot of our standard home brewers that are labled as 12 cup pots or brewers, would actually yeld about 60oz of coffee. With the US Cup measurement being 8oz, that would make 7.5 cups of coffee.

Quick reference:

  • 12cup brewer -- 1774g(60oz) of water --104g(3.7oz) coffee -- roughly 12 Tablespoons
  • 10 cup brewer -- 1479g(50oz) of water -- 87g(3oz) coffee -- Roughly 7 Tablespoons

What you will need:

  • A drip coffee brewer of some kind
  • Coffee (preferably ground fresh)
  • Coffee filter
  • Filtered water

How To Brew:

  • Step 1

Preheat French Press with hot water. Remove water after it is preheated.
  • Step 2

Add Coffee to French Press. (If you have a scale, set the french press on the scale and zero it out.)
  • Step 3

Start a timer and begin pouring 540 grams of hot water into the french press making sure to saturate the grounds completely.
  • Step 4

Put the lid of the french press on top without pushing the plunger.
  • Step 5

When your timer hits 2 minutes, take off the lid and stir the coffee to saturate the grounds a little more. Pour the remaining 120 grams of hot water into the pot and replace the lid.
  • Step 6

At 4 minutes, press down the plunger slowly until it reaches the bottom of the pot.
  • Step 7

Pour and enjoy your delicious cup of coffee!
